Intake Process

The very first session for anyone under 15 is always with GUARDIANS-ONLY, and is 2 hours long.

We will go over a comprehensive history including developmental milestones, current struggles, and family dynamics. The assessment phase varies between each family and I will take all aspects into account- physical, emotional, exposure to toxic stress, family of origin, environment, etc.

My intake may be more in-depth than you may have encountered with therapists in the past. This all encompassing look helps me gain greater understanding in how to support the family. Sometimes we may find that events have taken place in your, or a child's internal system has been coded as a trauma, that is not something we typically think of as a major life-altering event. Nor, It is always something that appears rational to our adult brains. However, that does not mean it is any less REAL or impactful. A sense of FELT safety is just as important as actual physical safety.

However, please be aware that when people use their health insurance, A mental health diagnosis needs to be assigned and provided to the insurance company for them to cover the sessions. This confidential information becomes part of the client's permanent medical record. Insurance tends to reimburse approx $90-$100 per session (including copays). Insurance sometimes determines the number of sessions allowed per calendar year, may not cover 2 different types of sessions on the same day (ex: individual with client and then parent session), and does not reimburse for any time spent outside of session preparing, gathering resources, consulting with other professionals or the school, time addressing information or contact through email or text message, etc.

You can chose to opt out of using insurance and instead pay cash (possible sliding scale availability), to maintain privacy and control over services received. Having greater control over what information insurance has access to around diagnosis and therapy interventions may become more important as we more into more uncertain information sharing climates and how this information may be used by government and adjacent entities.
