Did you know that the NUMBER ONE thing you can do as a caregiver when your kiddo (or other adults) are having a hard time with their emotions- is for you to stay as calm and regulated as you can? There are enough tips, trick,s methods, interventions to make yourself dizzy. When in the moment we sometimes can't remember any of them.!?!?!?!?
That's okay. Our bodies send signals to connect with the brains and bodies of those around us to mimic the regulation that we give off. We are big copy cats that are influenced by the moods and emotional energy given off by those we are connected with.
So if you can do nothing else, do your best to regulate yourself, bring your system into a greater sense of calm, and our kiddos won't be able to help calming with us. Is it a magic wand to bring even the worst tantrums to zero? No. but any small amount of regulation gets the nervous system moving in the right track.
